Pune: In a significant development, an Assistant Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been relieved from duty for violating the two-child policy mandated for government employees in Maharashtra. The policy, designed to promote population control, has been a subject of controversy over its strict enforcement.
The officer in question reportedly became a parent for the third time leading to the immediate initiation of disciplinary action. According to sources within the PMC, the action was taken as per the provisions of the Maharashtra Civil Services (Declaration of Small Family) Rules, 2005. The rules clearly state that any government employee who has more than two children after a specified cutoff date is deemed ineligible for continued service.
Policy Implications
The two-child policy has been in place for nearly two decades in Maharashtra, aimed at curbing population growth and encouraging family planning. The policy covers a wide range of government employees, including those in municipal corporations. However, this case has reignited debates about the policy’s relevance and fairness in today’s socio-economic context.
